Moore Mountain Run

Fellow runners and walkers,

Gary Smeltzer, our Vice President, and Moore Mountain race director has relocated to Napa California and is in the process of purchasing the local running shoe store. He was also the Race Director of the Moore Mountain Run and is unable to continue that venture. The Lopers Board has decided to cancel the run as we aren't prepared to take over for him at this late date. I hope this isn't a problem for anyone. If you sent in an entry form, it will be returned.
Sorry and thank you for your support.

This Saturday, the 16th, is cleanup day at Moore Park. The City Parks waives the fees for the runs we do at Moore Park. In return they ask for a little help on Special cleanup up days. If anywould like to donate an hour or two to help promote our Running Club you can show up around 9:00 AM. There is a release form and a place to sign indicating the Linkville Lopers as the organization you are volunteering for. Any help would be greatly appreciated, not only by us , but by The Friends of Moore Park .

Course Descriptions, Run for the Birds

Here is a brief description of the courses that we have set for Saturday's Run for the Birds. All races will start and end in Veteran's Park

The course for The Kids 1 Mile has been changed to the same as the Open 1 Mile, see below.

The Open 1 Mile Run/Walk is an out and back. First you will head east down Klamath Avenue, turn right on Third St. into the new Timber Mill development area, turn around at the half mile point, return to Veteran's Park.

The 5k run/walk is also an out and back course. You will run out of Veteran's Park the opposite way, past the Favel Museum, turn right and head up the Link River Nature Trail for approximately 1.2 miles. The turn around point is near the bird blind past the dam. Return to Veteran's Park.

The 10k run will start up the 5k course, but continue on after the 5k competitors turn around. The 10k continues through the upper parking lot, then takes a left on Lakeshore drive, then a left up the Moore Park exit road.

Before the upper loop gate, runners will take a left up onto the ridge; follow the trail straight, crossing two trails until coming to a T. Take a left and continue until meeting with another trail on the left. Take this hard left back uphill (if you pass the set of three power poles, you have gone too far. Follow this trail all the way up to the gravel road.

Take a left, then a quick right down to the broken juniper. Another left uphill to a large pile of rocks on the left. Turn left and take this trail back to the gravel road. Left again on the gravel road. Run past one trail to the right then take the second right, until it meets up with a trail coming from the right.

Take this hard right and follow this trail past a trail to the right, across an older trail that looks like a ditch, up the steep incline back to the gravel road. Left toward the parking lot, then down to Riverside School. Take a left on Carrol St around the back of Riverside, then to Main St. Be careful crossing the road! Finish back in Veteran's Park.

We will have maps of the course available at the start/finish area. White spray on chalk will mark the course. Good luck and have fun.

Run for the Birds

I've (Homer has) been contacted by Fish and Wildlife to help put on a Run for the Birds on May 9th.

They are looking at a 1 mile kids run, 6th grade and under, 1 mile walk, 5k and 10k trail runs. I'm looking for ideas here. Start and finish at Favell, or maybe Moore Park. Akimi King is heading this up and she will be at our meeting on the 11th.

Which brings us to announce: General member meeting on March 11, 7:00 PM at the Jungle Gym, 6th and Walnut, beside Klamath Board Sports. Hope to see you there.

New Business
1. Homer announced that the Lopers had $1556.00 in the account at the time of the meeting
2. We have 39 memberships at the time of the meeting. (Approximately 72 members).
3. Homer updated the Road Runners Club of America contact information concerning the new races added this year, insuring that they would be covered by the clubs insurance.
4. The Lopers By-Laws now only require three board members and they were updated to include walkers. It was also amended to state that if the club were to dissolve the funds would be awarded to a local high school runner in the form of a onetime scholarship.
5. Gary mentioned that he was going to bring Lopers registration forms to the upcoming running events around Southern Oregon such as the Couples Shuffle & the Pear Blossom. It was also suggested that the Lopers should see about having some of our local runs posted on the Southern Oregon Runners news letter that comes out six times each year.
6. Jon Osborne has offered to assist the Lopers in the development of a web site. He and Jeff Sparks will be working together over the next month (s) to put something together that will best represent the club. Here are a few things we can thing about as they begin to put this together.
a. What do we want the site to say?
b. What would we like it to do?
c. What information do we want to be on it? (Must haves?)
d. Do we want it to have a place to register to be members, or links to upcoming running and walking events?
e. Mission statement? Do we have one? Do we want one? Should it be on the site? What are something’s that should be on it?
f. Five year plan…where should the Linkville Lopers be in five years? Do we have a plan?
7. Deana Dixon commented that the Bidwell Classic in Chico California is March 6th and if anyone was interested to contact her at the Jungle Gym.
8. Race directors for all of the events this summer have been chosen. The Winter Wings Run and the Run for the Music are set and all the volunteers and requirements have been met for things to go smoothly. Chad Elbert volunteered to do the Spud run October 17, 2009. Homer said that Bob Freirich is the race director for the Ralph Hill 5k held in July 18,2009. Alexis volunteered to be the director of a 5k and 1-mile kids run in May. More on this event to come.
9. Homer and Gary met with the City officials concerning the Moore Mountain Run. The run is slated for September 19,2009. The run would consist of a trail ½ marathon, 5k and a children’s 1 mile. They are now looking into whom to contact for permission for locations where the run may go beyond Moore Park.
10. Gary also mentioned that one way the club could wave the cost of permits for the Moore Mountain Run (MMR) is the Moore Park Volunteer Day on May 16th form 9am to 12pm. This would be a great opportunity to get the Lopers name out there for a good cause not to mention benefiting the MMR. Alexis suggested that a kid’s run might be a good idea on that day as well. It was not decided if that was a possible option at this meeting. We will be having a sign up sheet for this volunteer day so check your calendars to see if you will be available to help this May 16th.
11. Homer spoke with Tom Hotman about the Lake of the Woods Run on June 6th. Tom said that Sky Lakes is on track to put on the race. Homer will sit in on the Sky Lakes meetings to see if there is anything they may need from the Lopers.
12. Vic mentioned that one-week before the Lake of the Woods run is a 5k called Hooty’s Hilledge 5k on May 30th
13. Training runs will begin in mid-march (or sooner if the daylight permits) from the Ella Redkey Pool. The training runs will consist of 45 minute to 1-hour long sessions that will begin with stretching and proper warm-up with the focus being completion of a 5k (possibly the Volunteer day at Moore Park or Hooty’s) in May or June. Runs will start at 5pm from the parking lot.
14. There was a brief discussion of a new logo for the club… Jeff Sparks has a good idea (simple and direct) If you have something you think might be worth looking at please let us know… It was also brought up that we might want to produce a calendar so people would know when and where the race events are going to be. Jon O had a great idea and we will be looking into it as we move forward…be watching for the Lopers Running Calendar.
15. The next Lopers meeting will be on March 11th at 7pm.

Conclusion
The meeting was concluded.

New Business
1. Homer announced that Lopers had $1351.00 in the account at the
time of the meeting.
2. The Lopers Running Club has had eight new members join since the
last meeting. 27 memberships total.
3. Gary commented that the by-laws encourage community involvement.
Lopers need to be active in the community events like Healthy Active
Klamath (Patty Case at the Oregon extension office). Gary mentioned that
he was going to contact Chip Massy at the chamber to let him know what
we are doing. He also suggested that the Lopers consider becoming
involved in the local Relay for Life to help get the Lopers name out
there and that it is also a great cause to be involved in, and possibly
the Junior Achievement "bowl-thon". Most of the JA teams are about 4-5
member teams.
4. Jeff commented that the Lopers might consider a weekly run where
persons could meet and do a variety of distance training runs (5k & 10k)
geared to meet the individual at "their ability level" and grow from
there. A club is not a club unless people are involved. He suggested
that the runs could be geared to prepare new and old club members to for
upcoming races and to improve their running form and run times as well
as build new relationships. All people are a little more willing to do
something if they know someone is counting on them. Jeff will begin to
get things organized and will have more to report by the next Lopers
meeting. We will also be looking into possible discounts for being a
running and walking club member. Eric Wakkuri was going to look into
possible discounts at OIT.
5. It was brought up that there was not a system in place for
people to find out about upcoming events in and around the Klamath
Basin. It was suggested that the race directors assume the
responsibility of getting those fliers out to the local businesses.
Some of the businesses that were suggested were the Ledge (Mike
Angelina), The Daily Bagel (Donna), The Ella Redkey Pool (Valerie
Franklin),Harbor Isles (Brody), and finally The Herald & News. It was
stressed how important it is to get that information out to the public.
A possible liaison between the Lopers and race directors could possibly
assist in making sure the information gets out. A possible generic
information sheet was suggested and Gary said he would put something
together and have it ready by the next Lopers meeting.
6. Homer suggested that the Lopers bi-laws would need to be revised
as they were a bit out dated; he also stated that new board members
needed to be elected and then asked for volunteers. Scott Murchison,
Chad Elbert and Jeff Sparks all agreed to one year terms.
7. The name change for the Lopers was tabled for at least one year.
8. John Osborne volunteered to assist with the development of the
Lopers web-site. Homer is going to contact John to get things started.
9. The topic of a new design logo was brought up. A couple ideas
were suggested but nothing was decided on. Homer suggested that a new
design could be made as a promo made on a nicer quality shirt and offer
them at the local races. Possibly put it out on blog-site as a contest
(give us your best idea for a new Lopers logo).
10. John Sarabia (race director for The Winter Wings) announced his
race would be held on February 15, 2009 at Miller Island Game Refuge
starting at 2:00pm. A table would be set up to promote the club. A few
members would also be on hand to help John.
11. Ron Baker requested assistance with his Bonanza Fun Run at the
end of July in Bonanza. It was agreed that the Lopers time clock and
help with the race would be made available. It was also mentioned that
the Lopers would attempt to get involved with the Mazama Mud Run (up to
300 participants) on the third Tuesday of September. As well as the
Pelican Flight, Bob Freirich, and finally the YMCA triathlons.
12. The Crater Lake Marathon was mentioned by Homer. It was agreed
that Homer would talk to Bob and work on an exit plan for when he is
ready to stop running it himself.
13. Race day packet pickup: The race director will determine the
packet pickup location.
14. Lake of the Woods race: Someone needs to talk with Tom Hotman
and see if they need assistance or something else from the Lopers.
15. Gary's Dream: Moore Park Trail Run? Will contact Lillian about
land access and the beginning steps to make it a reality.
16. The topic of a new Lopers meeting place was discussed and Deanna
said she is happy to have us stay at the Jungle Gym. Gary mentioned
that the Pelican Bay conference room could be available if needed.
Scott suggested that He would ask if the lower section of the court
house would be available and let everyone know by the next meeting.
The meeting concluded.
